Genna suggests increasing education about mental health during perinatal classes to help reduce stigma.

Interviewer: You’ve been through this incredible experience. If you were in charge of prenatal education and education of healthcare professionals, what would be on the curriculum?

The signs and symptoms of postpartum psychosis and postpartum depression.

Interviewer: Did you go to prenatal classes when you were pregnant?

I did, yeah.

Interviewer: Did they touch on anything?

They talked about postpartum depression. I remember specifically giving them the feedback that I wanted more in the evaluation of the course. My understanding is that one in five women deal with postpartum mental health issues and I think people don’t talk about it and there’s a lot of shame around it. If there’s a way to share stories like this website and decrease the stigma around that it’s not women’s fault and it’s not something that they have control over and it doesn’t mean that they’re weak, that it is something that happens and there’s help out there.
